CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Cleanup is underway at a public housing site in Charlottesville after a tree fell down onto a building at the Westhaven housing community.

People living at Westhaven say several apartments are damaged by the tree that fell around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and have no power. Tree cutters spent Friday breaking down the tree and its branches.

Residents of the damaged units say they heard a loud noise and felt the building shake when the three came down.

“That’s where our kids play at all the time, thank God they weren’t there” said Rochelle Wheeler, who is a resident of one of the units that lost power. “They were just playing water balloons there the other day. It’s a big inconvenience and it’s hard. I just thank God nobody was there.”

The displaced families are staying at a Hampton Inn until the building is repaired.
