CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A charity event in Charlottesville is helping The Haven shelter.

The Haven operates a day shelter in Charlottesville for the homeless. A Santa Speedo Run took over The Corner at the University of Virginia to benefit the organization.

The charity event is not a new concept. Larger cities like Boston and Chicago have been doing it for years, and it originated in Philadelphia. This is the first year for Charlottesville.

Organizers say the event combines a love of streaking and the holiday season. The team at Tread Happy teamed up with Trinity for this event. In addition to a portion of the proceeds from this event for The Haven, organizers were also collecting coats at the door of the restaurant, to help keep people warm as winter approaches.

“It's a really cool way to bring the idea of fitness to this community and also raise money for an important charity at the same time. So the idea is to do it when it's cold and to be semi clothed,” said Claire Mitchell, the cofounder Tread Happy.
