AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Heavy traffic and fog created a mess on Interstate 64 over Afton Mountain on a busy holiday travel day Sunday.

State police say one crash in the westbound lanes of I64 near mile marker 98 involved three vehicles. One of the vehicles flipped in the middle of the roadway. No one was seriously injured.

That crash followed another accident at the same spot on the eastbound side earlier in the evening that held up traffic for several hours.

Virginia state police say three separate chain reaction crashes involving eight vehicles brought Interstate 64 Westbound to a standstill just before 12 p.m. The pileup backed up westbound traffic for nearly 13 miles.

Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.

There's no word on what caused the crashes but drivers were dealing dense fog.
