CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - It was an exciting afternoon Saturday on the downtown mall in Charlottesville.

The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia surprised people with an impromptu concert right on the mall. A "Conduct Us" music stand invited anyone from the crowd to lead the group in playing a song.

Music director Kate Tamarkin says it's exciting to see many different people try it. “That's part of the fun, is to see what peoples natural instincts are because lots of people have had the fantasy of conducting an orchestra, so here's an orchestra,” she said.

The symphony is a combination of UVA students and musicians from the community who audition for spots. This year is their 40th anniversary.
