Wednesday, The Albemarle Garden Club handed over $15,000 to several organizations in the community.

The City Schoolyard Garden will use a chunk of the cash to support teaching about gardening at Charlottesville schools. Another piece of the funding will go to a University of Virginia graduate student to fund her research. Gwen McGinn will study the importance of root systems and how they relate to ecological conditions.

"Gwen's research will be that the architects should take into consideration the plantings that would be surrounding the building because the roots can be, as we know, disruptive in our construction,” said garden club member Consi Palmer.

The money will also fund an installation of Jeffersonian trees at the Lewis and Clark Exploratory Center.
