Community Holds Auction to Help Waynesboro Man Battling Cancer
A Waynesboro man has been battling cancer for years and the community responded in a big way Friday night.
Retired police officer and auctioneer Tommy Hoy has fought bladder cancer, breast cancer and now lymphoma. So a couple of friends thought an auction to help with the medical bills would be perfect for the auctioneer. The benefit started at 5:00 and was expected to last well into the night.
Organizers say they are amazed by all the items given. Paula Panel, one of the event organizers, said, "It just started coming. I mean it was overwhelming. I mean I've never seen such an outpouring of... ‘Yes, I'd love to help and donate the items.'"
Organizers say there were more than 50 gift certificates donated as well as many new and used items. Even the opportunity to shoot a machine gun was auctioned off.
