A Staunton man is behind bars in Albemarle County, accused of leading police on a high-speed chase on Interstate 64.

Fifty-one-year-old Richard Merle Hawkins faces reckless driving, felony attempting to elude police, gun, and drug paraphernalia charges.

State police say troopers clocked him driving his new Chevy Corvette 120 miles per hour on I-64 at Afton on Saturday night.  They started chasing him, but troopers say Hawkins wrecked his car at the Virginia Department of Transportation Memorial, ditched it at a rest stop later, and got a ride to Waynesboro.

Police arrested him there two hours later and took him to the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail.
