A scooter rider is being treated for head injuries at the University of Virginia Medical Center after a crash in downtown Charlottesville Tuesday morning.

It happened at the intersection of E. Water Street and 4th Street around 9:45. Charlottesville police say the 63-year-old driver of a Rav4 was crossing the intersection of Water and 4th Street when her car collided with a scooter traveling east on Water Street.

The rider of the scooter, a 28-year-old male, struck the right side of her car. His helmet was not securely fastened and upon impact it came off. The extent of the injuries to the driver's head sustained during the crash have not been released.

Charlottesville police say charges are pending.
