One woman is dead Friday morning and a man and baby are at the University of Virginia Medical Center following a crash in Nelson County. It happened late Thursday night.

The three were traveling eastbound on Route 56 in Shipman when the driver, Elizabeth Sprouse, lost control of the vehicle and was ejected from the car.

The male passenger was found pinned below the car and the infant was found in the backseat upside down in a car seat.

"The vehicle lost control and went off the left shoulder of the roadway, struck some rocks and an embankment and then flipped over in the road," explained JD Allen of Virginia State Police.

Helicopters were used to transport some of the passengers to the University of Virginia Medical Center. There were no other cars involved in the accident.

Police tell us that speed appears to be a factor.
