Staunton police found more than they expected during a drug raid Tuesday. They went looking for drugs; instead, they found a three foot alligator.

Officers were serving a search warrant at a home on National Avenue Tuesday but found the gator in the basement in what they described as a "pond-like arrangement." The alligator is now in the care of the Virginia Wildlife Center.

Police charged 30-year-old Carlin R. Adams with possessing an exotic animal, as well as animal cruelty for alleged mistreatment of a dog outside the house.

There is no word yet on whether any drugs were found.
