NORTH GARDEN, Va. (WVIR) - When a large tree fell at Walnut Creek Park the Charlottesville Area Mountain Biking Club got to work repairing what that tree broke.

“They build a new bridge, but it needs a new trail to and from the bridge on both sides of the waterway,” Dave Stackhouse with the Charlottesville Area Mountain Biking Club said.

The new trail will direct people to a new bridge.

“Trails are community. It’s a place where anyone in the community can go out and enjoy nature. I think that use of trails helps people become better stewards of the environment and of nature,” Stackhouse said.

This is not the first time the club has stepped in to help.

“The Mountain Bike Club maintains and builds trails all throughout central Virginia where the primary volunteer army that the folks at the city and the county use to you know, improve trails do reroutes or put in new trails,” Stackhouse said.

This trail is for more than just biking.

“We don’t get paid for anything we do. We just do it because we like to ride these trails and we’d like to have trails for the community to hike, dog walkers all that these are all shared use trails,” Stackhouse said.

Four hours of work results in a trail that lasts.

“We’re doing something that leaves our mark on the earth that people can use forever in a healthy outdoor recreational way,” Stackhouse said.

The club says it’s open to any volunteers coming to help with future repairs.
