CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Here at Washington Park it’s all hands on deck, working on a project tying together the entire community.

“It just really is the definition of sort of a grassroots community effort,” Albemarle Garden Club’s Dana Harris said.

The Albemarle Garden Club has been working on the Washington Park Bog Garden for a while but on April 22, the group had some more help from the UVA Darden School of Business.

“It’s really nice to just get out here in the community and really see the impact that our business education and some other skills can make on the community at large,” Darden Student Elizabeth Owen said. “I think it’s really important to be a part of what’s gone on out here.”

The work day included lots of landscaping with the goal of removing invasive species of plants from the trails.

“Our hope is that we’re able to continue to push forward on planting more native plants,” Harris said. “Our short term goal is to take the center bar boardwalk and redo it and create a little fern grotto.”

The hope is to create a set of trails that can bring together everyone in the community.

“The goal is to really celebrate and learn about the heritage and the history of this park,” Darden Student Caroline Ey said. “There’s a lot of history and diversity that have gone into saving and kind of recreating this space and re kind of making it rejuvenated.”

This project is aimed at clearing out trails but there’s also a goal to connect the paths to historic Burley Field.

“We’ve built a bunch of great trails here and we’ve been working to bring this sort of Burley High School back yard this way, and we’ve cut down a fence and we’re creating pathways so it’s a nicer urban place to be,” Harris said.
