CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A group called Mural Mosaic chose Charlottesville for its next big project -- “America Connects National Mural Mosaic.” More than 1,500 artists from New York to Hawaii are designing their own tiles that will be displayed in Charlottesville to create an even bigger piece of art.

“Artists are strictly painting their little tiles. And then they just focus on their art. And then we worry about putting it together and make a nice big picture,” Lewis Lavoie with the Mural Mosaic Global Roots Project said.

Each tile has set colors, but the design is left up to the artist.

“We’re getting some really strong images of the country, we’re getting strong images of people they want to paint and honor,” Lavoie said.

The National Mural might even include tiles from your neighbors.

“It was really special for us to have something that has not only people locally, but people from across the country, contribute tiles, these little four by four pieces of art, to compile into this beautiful mosaic and to have this mural displayed right here in the park,” the Executive Director of IX Art Park Alex Bryant said.

Mural Mosaic started as a way to connect artists of all kinds during the pandemic.

“What we’re doing is we’re creating these cohorts of people that are able to paint and as families and try to give people this sense of connecting, even though there’s so much isolation. It’s been phenomenal,” Lavoie said.

IX Art Park was selected for its immersive aspect.

“People want people to have art experiences at IX Park. They understand this. They created a phenomenal park, that you go there with your family and you get to experience art,” Lavoie said.

The mural will be revealed on May 27th.

“It’ll actually go right here, right next to our other new mural. So we’re really excited about how those two new pieces of art will play together,” Bryant said.
