CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The UVA men’s lacrosse team will be on the road this weekend, but they won’t have to go far, as the second-ranked Cavaliers will travel to face Richmond.

The ‘Hoos will be playing in the state capitol for the first time since 2017.

Virginia has never lost against Richmond, going a perfect 7-0, in a rivalry which began in 2014.

The Spiders are 5-3 this season.

Their three-losses have come against 4th-ranked North Carolina, 10th-ranked Duke, and 5th-ranked Georgetown.

The Cavaliers will ride the bus to Richmond on the morning of the game, which isn’t their normal gameday routine, but sophomore longstick midfielder Ben Wayer says it is familiar.

“It kind of reminds me of high school, which I think is pretty cool,” says Wayer. “I don’t think it’ll bother anyone too much. We’ve all been playing lacrosse for so long, I don’t think it matters how we get there. Once we get our normal warm-up in, I think we’ll be all ready to go.”

Head coach Lars Tiffany adds, “We say, ‘The Land of Great is lonely.’ It’s really hard to be a great team. It’s hard to be a great athlete. If it was easy, there would be a lot of people in the Land of Great. It’s a lonely place, though, so can you bring it every time you step on the field.”

Virginia and Richmond are scheduled to faceoff on Saturday at noon at Robins Stadium.
