‘Hoos perform for NFL Scouts on Pro Timing Day
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Scouts from across the NFL descended on the George Welsh Practice Facility on Wednesday, for the UVA’s annual Pro Timing Day.
The thirteen Cavalier players who participated in the Pro Day have put in countless hours of work to get better at their chosen sport.
And with great success, as they are all Division I athletes.
But for many, this one Wednesday in March, could make or break their dreams of playing at the next level.
Safety Joey Blount says, “Every Saturday, you do your thing. You play as hard as you can. Every game matters, but it’s the measurables that really count.”
At the Pro Timing Day, the players’ height and weight was recorded, as well as things like wingspan and hand size.
That was followed by the bench press, 40-yard dash, and agility drills.
Wide receiver Ra’Shaun Henry had one focus.
“Speed,” says Henry. “Speed, for sure. Speed.”
Henry ran a 4.43 in the 40-yard dash.
Mandy Alonso was only able to do the bench press, while recovering from injury.
The defensive lineman lifted 225-pounds 33 times, which is more anyone did at the NFL combine this year.
“I wanted to do 40,” says Alonso, “but that bench press felt a little heavier than what I’ve been hitting, but I’m happy with 33.”
Jelani Woods was at the NFL Combine.
The 6-foot-7 tight end was one of the standout performers, and Wednesday’s Pro Timing Day was a chance for him to show more of what he can do.
“Today went excellent, actually,” says Woods. “I outdid the numbers that I wanted to do. I had great responses from all the coaches, pretty much. I feel like today went great.”
Blount set the pace with a 4.40 in the 40-yard dash.
He also had a 38 inch vertical, and did 20 reps on the bench.
“For my whole career to come down to this one day, it meant a lot,” says Blount. “After my bench, I knew I was on the right track. I was setting PR’s for myself in everything I was doing today. It was a great day, overall.”
Woods adds, “This is what you dream about. Just seeing this play out into fruition, and just waking up every day, knowing you have the chance to play at the next level, is the ultimate dream.”
The NFL Draft is set to begin on April 28th.
