One dead after multi-vehicle crash in Rockbridge County

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - Virginia State Police are investigating a multi-vehicle crash on southbound I-81 in Rockbridge County Wednesday morning that left one person dead.
The crash happened at 6:15 a.m. at mile marker 198.6, involving 4 tractor-trailers and 4 cars, according to police.
Several people are in a hospital, according to Rockbridge County Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Kevin Moore. State Police Sergeant Rick Garletts confirmed one person died.
Southbound lanes have been reopened after cleanup of debris, but there is still a substantial residual backup, according to VDOT.
