CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) - A Chesterfield nurse has won the $150,000 Powerball jackpot.

Jennifer Cates decided to buy Powerball tickets after noticing the Powerball amount on a billboard.

“Hey, it might be time to buy one,” Cates said.

Cates bought her tickets online through Virginia Lottery’s website for the December 23, 2020 drawing.

One of those tickets ended up being a $150,000 winner.

“It feels so good!” Cates later told Lottery officials. “I’m in shock!”

The winning numbers for that drawing were 6-13-38-39-53, and the Powerball number was 6. Her ticket matched four of the first five numbers plus the Powerball number. Normally that would win $50,000 in Powerball.

However, when she bought the ticket, she spent an extra dollar for Power Play®, which tripled her prize from $50,000 to $100,000.

Cates, a registered nurse, says she may use her winnings to buy a new vehicle.

The Virginia Lottery gives players the ability to purchase Powerball, Mega Millions and Cash4Life tickets online, along with many new instant games that are only available online.
