RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger says she is co-sponsoring the article of impeachment against President Donald Trump following the insurrection at the United States Capitol.
The president will face a single charge of “incitement of insurrection.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says Democrats will bring this resolution to a vote Wednesday if Vice President Pence doesn’t invoke the 25th Amendment to have Trump removed, and Pence is unlikely to do so.
Spanberger deliberated on whether to impeach the president last year. Now, after last week’s mayhem, she has no qualms whatsoever.
“It’s most regretful to me it’s not happening through the resignation of an unfit president who would provoke an insurrectionist attack. But if it is not through his resignation, if it’s not through the 25th Amendment, then I do believe that we are left no choice but to file articles of impeachment,” Spanberger said.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told Democrats that members should plan to return to Washington Tuesday evening.
Pelosi says she has the votes to impeach with a few Republicans expected to vote in favor, but a Senate trial won’t happen until Trump is already out of office.
Democrats hope impeachment will prevent Trump from ever holding public office again.
