COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WWBT) - The dog affectionately called ‘Peaches’ is expected to make a full recovery after she was found starving and tied to the fence at Colonial Heights Animal Shelter.
Officer Amanda Sverchek said her staffers had found the dog Tuesday morning in near-freezing temperatures.
“She was just sitting there on this thin little blanket, and we were all just in shock who just went and found her that way,” Sverchek said. “It was near 34 degrees out, and she was probably out there for a majority of the night, but we’ll never know how long for sure.”
Upon taking her in, Peaches was sent to Colonial Heights Veterinary Hospital to be evaluated. She was weighed at 29 pounds and had no evident health concerns to explain why she was so underweight.
“There were no worms, no heartworms, nothing like that,” Sverchek said. “It simply points to the fact that she was not given basic care her owner should have given her.”
While CHAS does have cameras, they were unable to see who was responsible for leashing the dog to the fence. If found, Sverchek said they have every intention of bringing criminal charges against them for abandonment and animal cruelty.
“I think the laws are there for a reason, and they need to be implemented,” Sverchek said. “A simple phone call would have sufficed. We would have helped in any way we could, but to leave a dog in these conditions is never acceptable.”
