Augusta County, Va. (WVIR) - Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal crash in Augusta County that killed a Waynesboro man on Wednesday, Jan. 6.
According to a state police press release, a trooper responded to the scene on Route 608, about a mile north of Route 667 at 10:47 a.m.
Police say a 2017 Jeep Patriot was traveling south on Route 608. As it rounded a curve, it crossed the center line, ran off the left side of the highway and hit a tree. The impact of the crash caused the Jeep Patriot to cross back over Route 608 and hit another tree.
The driver, 55-year-old Jeffery L. Coffey of Waynesboro, Va., died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.
The crash remains under investigation.
