CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Two of Virginia’s gubernatorial candidates weighed in on Wednesday’s events in Washington D.C.
Former governor and Democrat Terry McAuliffe was one of the first in Virginia to call for Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment, which would remove the president from office.
“I think many of these folks who have blindly followed Donald Trump through his crazy conspiracy theories have to realize that we are the United States of America,” McAuliffe said. “In this red versus blue, and Democrats and Republicans, and Trump versus others, we have to get past that.”
Republican Kirk Cox says he condemns the violence on the strongest of terms and believes there will be a peaceful transfer of power to come.
”I think one of the things we really need to do is return a little bit of civil discourse to government,” Cox said. “I have very strong opinions, I’m a conservative, but also I have the reputation of listening and crossing the aisle when appropriate.”
Both Cox and McAuliffe agreed on the need for unity in order to move forward and heal.
