CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The #22 Virginia men’s basketball team trailed by as many as 12 points in the 1st half, but rallied to beat Wake Forest 70-61 on Wednesday at John Paul Jones Arena.

UVA outscored the Demon Deacons 36-22 in the 2nd half, after trailing by five points at halftime.

Sam Hauser had a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the ‘Hoos, and all five starters scored in double figures.

Casey Morsell, Austin Katstra, and three assistant coaches missed the game due to COVID-19 issues, while Kody Stattmann is out with what the team called a ‘non-COVID-19 related cardiac issue.’

With a team at less than full strength, head coach Tony Bennett says he relied on input from his players, even more than usual.

“Chase Coleman, I could hear his voice,” says Bennett. “He wants to be a coach. He was excellent, talking to the guys, really has good insight into the game. I always rely on the players, and I was asking him stuff in the timeouts. But I could hear Chase, and some of the other guys saying some things, and I thought all of that was important. We came together, and made the most of the situation.”

Virginia (6-2, 2-0 ACC) will be back in action on Saturday at Boston College.
