RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Three military bases in Virginia that are named after Confederate generals will soon be changing.

Fort Lee, Fort Pickett and Fort A.P. Hill will all be renamed.

It comes after Congress recently passed a defense bill that included an amendment co-sponsored by U.S. Senator Tim Kaine.

“I’m also proud Congress sent a clear, bicameral message that we must rename DOD facilities currently named after Confederates. We cannot continue to honor those who fought against the United States to deprive African Americans of their equality if we as a country hope to overcome the racial injustices that continue to surround us today,” Kaine said when the bill was passed.

There will be a three-year process to rename the facilities.

A panel will come up with the new names.
