ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - James Madison’s Montpelier will be closed from January 1-15, 2021. The closure will give the staff a much-needed week break after the holidays, as well as provide time for routine maintenance on the historic property.
This year, the annual closure will allow staff to work on inventory and condition analysis of the collection in the mansion house, out buildings, Gilmore cabin, and museum shop, as well as finish up a project in the south yard of the south kitchen. Also, work on maintenance of water systems and roadways of the property will get underway.
“In stewarding a historic site the collection - which includes the building and the landscapes and all of the outbuildings - they’re all critical portions of our story and we need to make sure that we’re not only taking care of them on a daily basis, but we’re doing large maintenance related projects to keep them in pristine order,” Montpelier President and CEO Roy Young said.
From January 16 to March 14, Montpelier will be open to the public on weekends, as well as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Presidents’ Day holidays, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
