CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The Virginia Tech football team has voted to decline any potential bowl bids this year, which ends the Hokies’ postseason streak at 27 consecutive bowls.
Tech’s run of success from 1993-2019 was the longest-active bowl streak in the nation, and the fourth-longest all-time.
“I think it speaks to the difficulty of the season that they’ve been through,” says Fuente. “There were players that wanted to play. They were passionate about that. But we were going to do this all-together, or not. This was ultimately about our kids, and I think they’ve sacrificed enough.”
Florida State went to 36 consecutive bowl games from 1982-2017.
Nebraska (35) and Michigan (33) hold the second and third-longest streaks, respectively.
Virginia Tech finishes the 2020 season with a record of 5-6 overall, and 5-5 in the ACC.
The Hokies signed 24 players to a National Letter of Intent on the first day of the Early NCAA Signing Period on Wednesday.
Head coach Justin Fuente will be there to coach them in 2021, after receiving a vote of confidence from Athletic Director Whit Babcock on Tuesday.
Wednesday’s list of signees includes six defensive backs, four running backs, three wide receivers, three linebackers, three defensive linemen, two tight ends, two offensive lineman, and one quarterback.
