CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - FLOOD WATCH in effect Thursday for the region. Heavy rainfall from Zeta and a front is forecast to bring 2-3 inches, with locally higher amounts. Watch for flooding of small creeks, streams and low-lying areas. Remember, Never Attempt to Cross Flooded Roadways.
Hurricane Zeta made landfall Wednesday afternoon in southeast Louisiana, as a category 2 with winds of 110 mph. This tropical system will gain forward speed, racing off to the northeast, while weakening as is merges with a strong cold front. Rain develops tonight and continues heavy at times Thursday, before tapering off Friday morning. A widespread rain is expected with rain amounts of 2-3 inches, with locally higher amounts that could certainly trigger some flooding. Breezy at times Thursday, with some gusts up to 30 mph. The stronger winds and severe weather risk with damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes will mainly be confined farther to our south across southeast Virginia and into the Carolinas.
After the rain, a nice, cool and dry Halloween weekend is expected. Morning lows in the frosty 30s and daytime highs in the cool 50s. Sunday another frosty morning, with sunshine and highs either side of 60, during the afternoon. Don’t forget, this weekend marks the end of daylight savings time. Set clocks back one hour, early Sunday morning - “fall back”. Also a great time to replace batteries in home smoke detectors.
