VDOT presents plans for new diverging diamond pattern near I-64 exit 124

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A new traffic pattern will soon be coming to the intersection of I-64 and Route 250 near Pantops.

VDOT presented their plans to the Pantops Community Advisory Committee on Tuesday night for a new diverging diamond pattern on Route 250 near exit 124 off I-64. The pattern design is similar to that of Zion Crossroads.

Phase one of the project will begin in December, with the goal of completing the project by Spring of 2022.

Committee members were positive about the plans overall, but some raised concerns about the traffic impacts.

“I just worry about the continuing growth at Pantops, and this right turn thing out of Ashcroft where they have to now get over to a left lane to make a U-turn,” Sara Robinson, a Pantops Community Advisory Committee member, said. “Now, maybe I’m over anticipating the amount of traffic, but I’m not sure I am.”

VDOT clarified that the plan also includes several new traffic lights to mitigate traffic impacts.

VDOT also plans to make improvements to exit 118 as well as the ramps on and off Route 250 from Fontaine Ave.
