Two people have died following overnight car crash on 5th Street SW in Charlottesville

Charlottesville Police investigate overnight fatal accident on 5th Street SW

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The Charlottesville Police Department is investigating a single-vehicle fatal car crash on Fifth Street SW that happened just before 4 a.m. Saturday.

Two people are dead, and one was transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center in critical condition.

Both sides of 5th Street were closed between Cherry Avenue and Bailey Road for several hours. The road has since been re-opened. It is the third fatal crash on that stretch of 5th Street in as many months.


On October 10, 2020, at approximately 0343 hours, Charlottesville Police Department responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 700 block of 5th Street SW.

Two people are confirmed deceased, and one person was transported to UVA Hospital in critical condition. The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.  The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by the CPD Traffic Unit.

This is the third fatal crash 5th Street investigated by CPD in less than three months.
