NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - With graduation ceremonies canceled this year due to COVID-19, Nelson County High School brought graduation to the homes of this year’s seniors.
Parents and teachers drove in a multi-car and bus caravan to graduates' homes. They celebrated with honks, cheers, balloons, and congratulatory yard signs all over the county.
Nelson County High School Athletic Director Greg Mullins organized the effort, hoping to bring some normalcy to a very abnormal year. “Graduation’s a big deal. It’s a big deal here, it’s a big deal everywhere but especially in Nelson County. We’ve got a lot of kids and families who look forward to graduation for the entire year, and just the ceremony and doing it here on our football field and the stadium. And to miss out on that opportunity as we’ve done it traditionally. We wanted to try and do as many things as we could for the seniors.”
The graduation caravan started at 5 p.m. and went until 7 p.m.
