21 Arrested in Waynesboro Crackdown

Posted: Updated: Oct 14, 2008 08:40 PM EDT

A series of raids and arrests took nearly two dozen accused drug dealers off the streets of Waynesboro on Tuesday.

"Operation Crackdown" started on Port Republic Road in Waynesboro a year ago after complaints of gang and drug activity. Tuesday, 21 alleged street level drug dealers were put behind bars and authorities say more arrests are on the way.

The 21 men and women arrested Tuesday range in age from 22 to 45. Some of those people are related, and police say all traveled in the same circles in the city.

Undercover officers bought more than $16,000 worth of drugs during the year-long investigation. Last month, a Waynesboro grand jury indicted a total 28 alleged drug dealers for selling cocaine, crack, marijuana and guns. Officers from six police agencies started rounding them up at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

"All the arrests went without a hitch. We encountered no resistance. We were able to move in swiftly on the ones we needed to move in on swiftly and take those people into custody fairly rapidly.  And then from there, we even had some that turned themselves in at the police department," shared Sergeant Kelly Walker with the Waynesboro Police Department.

Seven people indicted in this operation are still on the loose. Waynesboro police say that the joint arrest teams continue to search for them.

The 21 people arrested are being held at the Middle River Regional Jail. Some face just one charge while others face as many as three drug related charges. The total indictments add up to 69 charges.

                       "OPERATION CRACKDOWN"

                               October 14, 2008

Beginning in the late summer of 2007 WASSP Task Force Officers and the Waynesboro Police Department began receiving a number of complaints regarding gang related narcotics distribution in the City of Waynesboro, particularly in the Port Republic Hill area.  WASSP (Waynesboro, Augusta, Staunton, State Police and ATF) Task Force Officers initiated a long term undercover investigation which identified a number of individuals both gang related and non gang related who were involved in the distribution of narcotics and firearms throughout the City. During the course of this investigation, in excess of $16,000 was spent on street level purchases of cocaine, crack cocaine, marijuana and firearms resulting in the indictment, by a Waynesboro Grand Jury, of 28 individuals on 69 charges related to narcotics, weapons and stolen property.

At 6:00 AM this morning and continuing throughout the day, the sealed indictments were opened and multijurisdictional arrest teams are taking those individuals indicted by the Grand Jury into custody. The arrest teams include officers from the Waynesboro and Staunton Police Departments, the Augusta County Sheriffs' Department, the Virginia State Police, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and the U.S. Marshall's Service.
