For Wiccans and followers of some other New Age religions, the movements of the Sun and other celestial bodies hold special meaning. Among the astronomical events having significance on the Wiccan calendar is the winter solstice.
On the night of the solstice, Wiccans celebrate Yule.
Astronomically, the winter solstice is the shortest day -- and longest night -- of the year. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, in 2012 the winter solstice occurs at 6:12 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on Dec. 21.
If you have friends who are Wiccans, crafts and other handmade items are considered appropriate gifts at Yule time.
