CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -

People who have a heart of helping other came out on Friday to get signed up to volunteer with organizations around Charlottesville.

United Way held a Mentor and Tutor Fair at the Charlottesville Omni Hotel for people with free time to get involved with the community. A total of 15 organizations were at the fair telling potential tutors about why they should join their teams.

Darlene Lee-Hill is a retired substitute teacher and decided to join Book Buddies because she enjoys working with children. She says seeing students grow is why she wants to get back to helping others.

“It’s kind of like teaching,” Lee-Hill said. “It’s like when you’ve got a child who has problems learning and then all of the sudden it’s like a light bulb goes on and they get it and that’s the best part.”
Some organizations only require as little as two hours a week to become a mentor or tutor.

The fair only happens once a year, but you can sign up to join and help all year long. More details can be found here.
