The Charlottesville Coalition for Gun Violence Prevention is getting ready for its annual vigil to remember the students and teachers killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

The group formed in 2012 after that shooting in Connecticut left 27 people dead. This year, the Charlottesville Coalition for Gun Violence Prevention is also using the vigil to remember victims of other mass shootings in our country.

On Saturday, dozens will gather at the foundation on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall where organizers and children will ring a bell after the reading of each mass shooting in our country. Local choir groups will also sing contemporary songs about hope and love.

In addition to organizing the vigil, the Charlottesville Coalition for Gun Violence Prevention is also working with Virginia delegates to push for stricter gun laws.

“We have to make some kind of sense from this and the only kind of sense we can make is to say we will not forget this,” said Gay Einstein of the Charlottesville Coalition for Gun Violence Prevention. “Their deaths had some sort of meaning, purpose.”

Moms Demand Action, the League of Women Voters, and Charlottesville’s Center for Peace and Justice are also sponsoring the vigil.

The vigil will be held at noon on Saturday and all are invited to participate.
