CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -

A Charlottesville nonprofit dedicated to providing mental health help to women is now inviting community members to take part in its annual writing contest.

The Women's Initiative is accepting poetry and essay entries of 500 words or fewer that tell the story of a woman who used a major life challenge as a learning opportunity for its “Challenge into Change” writing contest.

Female applicants may write about themselves or someone they know, and men can write about a significant woman in their lives.

“'Challenge into Change’ is a way to help spread the message of healing possibilities that really happens every day here at The Women’s Initiative,” Amanda Korman, the communications and outreach coordinator of The Women’s Initiative, said. “This writing contest is a way for people to tell those stories and lift up those voices of healing.”

Winners will receive cash prizes, and entrants will be honored at the 2019 Virginia Festival of the Book.

Submissions are due on Wednesday, December 12.
