Temporary Closure of Emmet Street to Expedite Waterline Project Completion

Posted: Updated:

City Of Charlottesville Press Release:

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Charlottesville Department of Utilities is committed to providing safe, reliable, and low-cost water service to residents and businesses. As a part of the ongoing waterline project along Ivy Road, Emmet Street, and Sprigg Lane, a portion of Emmet Street will be closed December 19, 2018 through January 14, 2019.

The closure of Emmet Street will run from Ivy Road south to the McCormick Road Bridge, with access to Sprigg Lane provided through the work zone. The complete closure of this section of Emmet Street will allow the city’s contractor, Faulconer Construction Company, to utilize multiple crews to work throughout the day decreasing the overall duration of the project. This period of closure coincides with UVA’s winter break, and will allow for the majority of the work in this area to be performed while students and faculty are not on Grounds.

Faulconer Construction Company will set up a detour around the work zone, beginning at the intersection of Emmet Street, Ivy Road, and University Avenue. The detour will run the length of University Avenue to the intersection with Jefferson Park Avenue (JPA), and continue down JPA to the intersection of Emmet Street on the south side of the McCormick Road Bridge. Access to the Emmet Street Garage will be maintained via Newcomb Road. A map of the detour route is provided below. An alternative detour route for trucks and high profile vehicles (10-feet high or taller) will be provided.

This waterline replacement project will replace pipes that are approximately 50-60 years old, and that have sustained multiple breaks. The installation of up-to-date ductile iron pipes will greatly improve water service in this area. The project began October 22, 2018 and is expected to take seven months to complete. This project is a part of the overall water main replacement program, which is integral in maintaining the safe, reliable, and low-cost water service provided by Charlottesville Department of Utilities.
