A bus tour around the commonwealth is hoping to make Virginia the 38th state to ratify a law nearly 100 years in the making.

The Equal Rights Amendment Tour made a stop at the University of Virginia Wednesday, November 14. The tour is part of 10-day, 1,500-mile effort to encourage lawmakers to ratify an amendment that would guarantee equal rights to women as part of the U.S. Constitution.

Katie Hornung, the director of the Equal Rights Amendment campaign, says Virginia has a unique opportunity to be the 38th state to ratify the measure.

Well we wanted to hit the big schools in Virginia, for sure. One of the things that a legislator has said to us a couple of times is, 'if this is a big deal the young people would be here.'  I don't know if that's just because they get tired of dealing with middle-aged moms or if they’re looking for a more fresh face, but we thought, 'you know what they’re right.' And perhaps the students that are in college don’t realize what’s on the table and that this is an important issue and that we should just take it to them.

If Virginia passes the movement, it would go to Congress and go into effect after 2 years.
