CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -

A man charged with felony malicious wounding stemming from the Unite the Right rally last year is now guilty of misdemeanor assault.

Fifty-two-year-old Donald Blakney entered into a plea agreement with the commonwealth's attorney in Charlottesville Circuit Court Tuesday, November 6.

Blakney admitted he hit another man in the back of the head with his cane on August 12, 2017. The defendant claims he was panhandling when someone spat on him and then struck him.

Blakney was given a 12-month sentence, but as part of the agreement, all the time was suspended.
