NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) -

Spartan Race Inc., the world's largest obstacle race and endurance brand, is coming back to Nelson County for the Virginia Sprint and Super Weekend.

Thousands of people of all ages and skill levels are expected to hit the grueling 4 mile sprint and 8-to-10 mile super races.

Right now, the course is ready for the more than 6,000 people who are already registered for Saturday and Sunday's races. These men and women will tackle barbed wire, mud and fire.

Crew members with Spartan started setting up the races a week ago. They say the ragged terrain at Infinity Downs Farm and Oak Ridge Estate & Farm are perfect to test people's endurance.

Spartan will also have smaller-scale festival challenges for spectators who want to try a Spartan race in the future, as well as music, food, beer and merchandise.

The goal of the weekend events are to encourage people to get outdoors and get active.

“It's not as intimidating as it seems. We get all walks of life that come out here, and Joe - our CEO - his biggest mission is just to rip people off the couch. And whether this is their first or their 20th, we're trying to make it the same experience for each one," said Tyler Gobin, race director.

Spartan came to Nelson County for the first time last year. This year's event is expected to be even bigger.
