CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized the City of Charlottesville with its first 2018 WaterSense Sustained Excellence Award, the highest level of program recognition, for its creative approach to supporting WaterSense and promoting water efficiency in 2017. The City of Charlottesville received one of 21 WaterSense awards today at the WaterSmart Innovations Conference for helping Americans to save water, energy, and money.
Since 2006, the City of Charlottesville along with more than 1,900 other WaterSense partners have helped consumers save more than 2.7 trillion gallons of water, or more than the amount used by all U.S. households for nearly 100 days. In addition to water savings, WaterSense labeled products and homes have helped reduce the amount of energy needed to heat, pump, and treat water by 367 billion kilowatt hours—which is enough to power more than 34.1 million homes for a year—and save $63.8 billion in water and energy bills.
“Through innovation and commitment, our partners are helping to transform the marketplace for water-efficient, high-performing products and homes,” said Veronica Blette, WaterSense program manager. “The WaterSense Sustained Excellence, Partner of the Year, and Excellence Award winners are leading the charge to save water, energy, and money for future generations.”
The City of Charlottesville’s Water Conservation Program was honored with its first WaterSense Sustained Excellence Award after receiving three consecutive Promotional Partner of the Year Awards. Some of the highlighted programs and community engagement efforts include:
- Outreach and messaging efforts for Charlottesville’s first significant drought in ten years using magnets on City vehicles, yard signs on public lands, direct mailers, and traditional and social media platforms to notify the community on drought restrictions.
- Initiation of #WaterTipWednesday social media campaign to provide the community regular tips and information on how to save water in Charlottesville across a wide variety of topics.
- Consistent and increased participation in numerous community events throughout the year as well as promotion of conservation messages and tips to save water through TV commercials, print ads, radio ads, online ads, and social media.
- Distribution of water saving fixtures to City residents including 600 WaterSense labeled showerheads and 1,500 WaterSense labeled faucet aerators.
“Charlottesville is honored to receive this accolade from the WaterSense program,” said Jill Greiner, the City of Charlottesville’s Water Conservation Program Coordinator. “The success of the Water Conservation Program would not be possible without the continued support of the community and their commitment to water efficiency.
