Driver Charged with Firearm Possession Related to Fatal Crash on 5th Street

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -

Charlottesville police are charging the man they believe was behind the wheel during a fatal crash early Monday morning.

Investigators say 20-year-old Quintus Brooks died at the scene of a single-vehicle crash along 5th Street around 5:30 a.m. Monday, October 1.

The driver, 21-year-old Jerrod Cortez Wells, was treated for his injuries at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Authorities announced Tuesday, October 2, that investigators discovered Wells had a gun. He was taken into custody after being discharged from the hospital, and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Wells is currently being held at the Albemarle/Charlottesville Regional Jail.

The crash itself is still under investigation.

The Charlottesville Police Department is asking that anyone who witnessed activity possibly related to the crash to call CrimeStoppers at 434-977-4000.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - On October 1, 2018 at approximately 5:34 a.m. Charlottesville Police Officers responded to the 900 block of 5th Street SW for a single vehicle crash with injury.

Responding officers discovered that the vehicle had been occupied by two adult males.

The passenger, 20-year-old Charlottesville resident Quintus Brooks, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, 21-year-old Charlottesville resident Jerrod Cortez Wells, was transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

Due to the seriousness of the crash, members of the department’s Traffic Unit were called to investigate. During the course of the investigation, it was discovered Mr. Wells was in possession of a firearm.

Mr. Wells has been discharged from the hospital and taken into police custody and charged with 18.2-308.2: possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Mr. Wells is currently being held at the Albemarle/Charlottesville Regional Jail.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing. The area where the crash occurred is a high traffic area with normally high volume in the mornings.
