GREENE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) -

A project in Greene County that’s years in the making has taken another step closer to becoming a reality.

That project is known as Greene Commons, which will be a new entertainment venue in Greene County.

Economic leaders say it will increase opportunities for tourism in the county.

On Wednesday, September 12, leaders and community members gathered at the future site behind the Greene County Office Building off Celt Road to break ground on the project.

It will house the Greene County Farmers Market, and it’ll be able to hold 14 different vendors.

The project is almost four years in the making, and officials say Wednesday's groundbreaking officially makes the project a reality.

"This is a big step, this has been in the making for years,” Alan Yost, Greene County’s director of economic development and tourism, said. “We've been working with the revitalization, we've gotten almost $2 million worth of grants over the years to revitalize Stanardsville, and this really will be an anchor with that revitalization."

Officials say the new venue will be able to host a variety of events, including concerts and community gatherings.

Leaders of the project say construction will begin immediately, and as long as the weather holds up over the next few months then the project will be complete by March 2019 - just in time for next year's farmers market.
