Plans are moving forward for redeveloping a Charlottesville hotel destroyed by fire last year.

The owners of the Excel Inn along Emmet Street want to redevelop the property into a seven-story, 72-room boutique hotel called Gallery Court.

On Tuesday, September 11, the Charlottesville Planning Commission granted a special-use permit, but there are a large number of conditions. Meaning, the applicant will have to change many of the design plans.

Neighbors argued the hotel is too big. Others say Charlottesville doesn't have enough hotels.
