CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -

People who rely on public transportation may experience some difficulties getting around parts of Charlottesville later in the week.

Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) is temporarily shifting bus services during the anniversary weekend of August 12.

CAT says it heard from a number of riders that want the ability to get around, or simply stay away from the Downtown Mall area.

“Some of what we've done in cooperation with the Incident Management Team is we've just pulled all of our services out of downtown for the weekend,” said CAT Director of Transportation John Jones. “Beginning Friday evening at 6 p.m., we will close the downtown station.”

All bus transfer operations will move from the Downtown Transit Station along Water Street to the Park & Ride location on Avon Street Extended.

“We'll have customer service representatives on site to help people with any transfers that they need to make to get to where they need to go,” Jones said.

However, that plan doesn't sit well with everyone.

“I understand the precautions being took, but it's just really inconvenient for a lot of people,” said Jabril Carter. “This is like the Mecca of the town - once you mess up this little area, a lot of people's days and weekends are going to be out of whack.”

But for those traveling to and around the county, the routes will remain unchanged.

"There will be no disruptions to any of that service in the county," Jones said. "In fact, Route 5 that runs totally in the county - that route that runs between Barracks Road and Walmart that runs west of Route 29 - will not be disrupted at all, that route will run as it always does."

CAT says that routes serving the Avon Street Extended transfer hub will follow the same departure times as the downtown station.

“The schedule will fluctuate some, but the buses will be running standard route services, except again, no service in the immediate downtown area,” Jones explained.

Charlottesville Area Transit is advising people that park in the Avon Street Extended Park & Ride location to have their cars moved before 5:30 p.m. on Friday, August 10.
