One Charlottesville counseling center is warning parents to prepare their kids for potential trauma as the anniversary of the Unite the Right Rally approaches next weekend.

ReadyKids is a counseling service that works to support children through tough times.

The center’s enrollment numbers spiked last year after the events of August 12.

Counselors said they had children as young as two years old affected by the violence in Charlottesville. Now, they’re giving parents advice on how to console their children.

“The goal is to honor the fact that kids might feel the stress, especially if they were triggered last year,” said Shannon Noe, who is a counselor at the center. “They’re going to have feelings about it this year and so to really create space for kids to be able to work through that, to learn more about how you are feeling, how are you think about this and then what can we do to help you feel better.”

Right now, the center has more than 60 people of its waitlist.
