Virginia State Police are mourning the loss of one of its canine troopers.

Law enforcement officers held a ceremony for Vader, who died in connection with a police chase in Sussex County. Troopers saluted the dog as his body was placed into a kennel and escorted to a veterinarian hospital in Richmond.

Vader was shot early Wednesday, August 1, after state police had tried to pull over a vehicle that had been reported stolen.

Someone in the suspect vehicle reportedly shot at the trooper as the chase moved along Interstate 95.

The chase eventually ended, and a man inside the suspect vehicle is said to have fired at authorities. A bullet struck Vader.

The driver, believed to be 41-year-old Tramaine Marquese Poolewas, was fatally shot. A passenger in the suspect vehicle was reportedly injured, as well.

Poole was wanted for the murder of 28-year-old Tyekqua Nesbitt of New Haven, Connecticut.
