CROZET, Va. (WVIR) -

On Wednesday night, Albemarle County supervisors approved plans to make it easier to treat water and sewage at the Crozet treatment plant. The project involves allowing the treatment plan to tie into the county service authority sanitary sewer system.

Currently, crews have to truck the waste back to the Moore’s Creek treatment facility.

The change would allow crews to pump waste directly to the facility through pipes and eliminate the need for truck hauling.

“It’s important to do because of the safety aspects,” said senior civil engineer at Rivanna Water and Sewage Authority Tom Freeman. “Every time we have to remove the sludge in the lagoon by truck, we have to stop traffic and set up a work zone and in the process is expensive and takes a lot of planning and it does create a safety hazard on route 240.”

This is part of a major project to expand the Crozet water treatment plant. The project should be under construction starting in January of 2019.
