ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) -

A group of teenagers in Orange County are building relationships with law enforcement while also learning about team building.

The weeklong Orange County Sheriff’s Citizens Youth Academy program gives these 18 teenagers a chance to learn about issues facing the community, and gives them hands-on emergency training.

The group toured the county's jail and courthouse Tuesday, July 10 before heading out to fish with some of the deputies.

"It's a great experience. They do a lot of hands-on, hands-off things and teach you a lot about what they do in a day's time and offer a lot you can learn about it," said Shawn Helton.

"I thought it was really cool how they had it set up. The programs that they have us do - we get to go fishing, we get to go hiking, we get to use a couple of their rifles and handguns out on the range. They teach us about their involvement in our community," Sydney Bottino said.

The teenagers will also try out rock climbing and an obstacle course later this week. Thursday, the group will be learning the dangers of distracted and drunk driving.
