ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) -

After a scare in their payroll’s cyber security, Albemarle County is taking new steps to ensure its employees get paid.

An attempted breach in the county’s payroll system prompted officials to look into getting help from a cyber security consulting firm. In December, there were several unauthorized requests to change bank information for six employees.

The county detected the breach and luckily no one’s information was compromise.

After working with investigators, officials say hiring a firm will increase protection and prevent future cyber attacks.

“At this point, we believe that it’s prudent for us t take another hard look at all of the internal practices and systems to ensure that we are optimizing protection for our employees, which is the reason we’re going out now,” said Albemarle County’s chief financial officer William Letteri.

When the security firm is chosen, the group will go over the county’s current software system and processes in order to recommend improvements. The county will be accepting proposals from various cyber security firms until the end of the month.
