Construction of New Charlottesville High School Track Underway
New Charlottesville High School track is under construction
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -
Construction on a new track at Charlottesville High School is underway. The new track will replace one that had not been upgraded in more than three decades and provide a place for athletes of all levels to run.
The $2-million project will not only benefit student athletes but also community members of all ages who hope to take advantage of a new state-of-the-art facility.
“It’ll have a nice rubberized surface that I think will be kind of a clay color so it should be really attractive going with the retaining walls and blending in with the beautiful setting we have here, said CHS Athletic Director Rodney Redd.
The new track replaces one that Redd says was falling apart. “It was kind of an outdated design, and the shape and scope of what it could accomplish, but yes, it was also structurally failing as well.”
The renovation will provide a place for people of all abilities to exercise. It will not only be used by high school varsity athletes, but also by community members and all physical education classes.
The eight-lane track will feature an athletic field in the middle, bleachers around the outside, and a 6 stall private dressing and restroom.
“That’s going to make the facility much more functional not only for the public but for our day-to-day school use as well,” Redd stated. “Eventually, once we get our lights and kinda all of our bells and whistles, we'll be able to hold Virginia High School League and regional type state track meets.”
Despite all the rain this summer we've had this summer, construction is still on track. The project is expected to be complete for the start of the school year.
