STAUNTON, Va. (WVIR) -

The American Shakespeare Center in Staunton has announced its new artistic director.

Internationally acclaimed theater artist Ethan McSweeny comes to the valley with more than 80 productions to his credit.

McSweeny has worked on Broadway, off-Broadway, and abroad.

The new artistic director says there's a lot he's excited about as he gets ready to assume his new role.

"The first time I actually set foot in the Blackfriars Playhouse was when - that was when the light really went off and the magic of being in that space,” says McSweeny. “So, I'd say the space, the town, and then the acting company - which is, you know, where the heart and soul of this organization is, it's what's up on stage."

McSweeny says he hopes to draw more people to the playhouse, which means getting the word out to more people in and out of town.
